Common Ford Issues We See

EcoBoost Coolant Intrusion

The 1.6L EcoBoost engine (Escape, Fusion, Focus 2012–2017) is prone to coolant entering the cylinder via a failed head gasket or cracked head. Signs include coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, and overheating without a visible external leak. We perform a coolant pressure test and combustion leak test to diagnose.

Transmission Harshness (Focus PowerShift DCT)

The Ford PowerShift dual-clutch transmission in 2012–2016 Focus and Fiesta models is known for shuddering, hesitation, and hard downshifts. Some issues respond to transmission control module updates and fluid service. We diagnose and advise on realistic repair expectations for this transmission.

Brake Pulsation (F-150, Explorer, Expedition)

Heavier Ford trucks and SUVs generate significant brake heat, which causes rotor warping over time. The result is a pulsating pedal under moderate-to-hard braking. We resurface or replace rotors and verify caliper bracket condition, which can also cause uneven wear.

Spark Plug Issues (Triton V8 & EcoBoost)

Ford's 5.4L Triton V8 (F-150, Expedition) has spark plugs that can break during removal if not done carefully. EcoBoost engines also require precise torque specs on plug installation. We handle Ford spark plugs with the correct procedures to avoid broken plugs.

What We Don't Do (Honest)

A few Ford tasks require dealer authorization or Ford's proprietary IDS tooling:

Warranty repairs under Ford's factory or extended warranty — these require an authorized Ford dealer.

PCM programming and module flashing that requires Ford's IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) software and a Ford dealer account.

Ford SYNC system updates that require an authorized dealer connection to Ford's network.

Ford FAQ

What is EcoBoost coolant intrusion and should I be worried?
EcoBoost coolant intrusion refers to coolant entering the combustion chamber, typically through a failed head gasket or cracked head. It's a documented concern on 1.6L EcoBoost engines (2012–2017 Escape, Focus, Fusion). Symptoms include white exhaust smoke, coolant loss with no visible leak, and overheating. Catch it early and it's a repair; ignore it and it becomes an engine replacement.
My Ford F-150 or Explorer has brake pulsation — what causes it?
Brake pedal pulsation (a shuddering feeling when stopping) on F-150 and Explorer is almost always warped rotors from heat cycling. It's very common on these heavier vehicles. We machine rotors when possible or replace them — we quote which option makes sense based on rotor thickness.
Does my Ford need full synthetic oil?
All EcoBoost engines (1.0L, 1.5L, 1.6L, 2.0L, 2.3L, 2.7L, 3.5L) require full synthetic 5W-30 or 0W-20 depending on the specific engine. The F-150 5.0L V8 also benefits from full synthetic. We use full synthetic for all Ford service starting at $69.99 (higher for larger engines).
Do you service Ford Maverick or Bronco?
Yes. The Ford Maverick (EcoBoost and hybrid), Bronco, and Bronco Sport are all vehicles we service for standard maintenance — oil changes, brakes, tires, diagnostics, and inspections. Call us with your specific year and model for availability.
